From rugged coastlines where lush rainforests meet rocky shores to soaring mountains and alpine lakes filled with water from bygone ice ages, the lower South Island of New Zealand features some of the most diverse landscapes in the world.

These stunning landscapes include four national parks within Te Wāhipounamu, a 2.6-million-hectare UNESCO World Heritage site which has plants, rocks and animals dating back 80 million years.

Walking through these ancient landscapes, it’s easy to imagine a giant moa bird striding through the rainforest while a massive Haast eagle circles in the sky above.
